Heartbeat vs Timestamp Bookmark Extensions

Timestamp bookmark extensions such as Timi, YouMark, YT Bookmarker and Timemark save private notes at a time in a YouTube video inside your browser; Heartbeat's extension saves a public moment with its own h.ki page that others can find, follow and collect. Bookmarkers win for private study notes, Heartbeat for sharing and collecting.

Heartbeat's Chrome extension and the many YouTube timestamp bookmark extensions start the same way, with one key or click that remembers a second of a video, but they keep it in different places: a bookmarker usually keeps your timestamps and notes for you alone, in your browser or account, while Heartbeat saves each one as a public moment on h.ki, with its own page that other people can open, favorite and copy. In his Nov 12, 2023 video George Vanous shows the Heartbeat side: on any YouTube video, "just press the H key that's it", and the moment is saved to your heartbeat. That difference, private notebook or public collection, decides which kind suits you.

Quick facts

How each one works

Heartbeat. Install the Heartbeat Extension, pin its Heart, and press H while any YouTube video plays. In the Aug 18, 2023 launch video George presses H twice and has two moments to jump between: "H creates a new heartbeat moment that's your hotkey while watching any YouTube video at any time". Each moment gets a title, can be nudged to the exact frame, and appears on h.ki at an address of its own (How to Make a Moment, Link to an Exact Moment). Without the extension, the same can be done on h.ki itself (Open a YouTube Video on Heartbeat).

The bookmarkers, as their Chrome Web Store listings describe them (read Nov 7, 2026; Vi.ki did not install them):

Extension What its listing says it does
Timi Ctrl + ; saves the current time of a YouTube video with a note
YouMark Clips with timestamps, tags and notes, exported as CSV or Excel
YT Bookmarker Notes on timestamps, editable
Timemark One-click bookmarks on YouTube and Vimeo
YouTube Diary Notes and bookmarks for YouTube videos

What the public side adds

Heartbeat's moments are public on purpose. In the Dec 25, 2023 features video George describes "a social network where everybody can follow each other's heartbeat", and "the whole goal of heartbeat is to connect strangers based on common interest" in video moments. So a moment you save also shows up in that video's Community list for the next viewer, and your profile becomes a collection others can follow. Heartbeat also reads timestamps that fans posted in a video's comments into the same list, which a private bookmarker never shows you.

What the bookmarkers do better

  • Privacy. Study notes on a lecture, or the parts of a tutorial you keep losing, may be nobody else's business. Bookmark extensions keep them to you; Heartbeat's moments go on a public page (Privacy Policy).
  • Notes, not titles. Several bookmarkers are built for writing a note at each second. A Heartbeat moment has a title and description, and longer writing goes in a viki.
  • No public profile. A bookmarker needs no handle and no Google sign-in on another site.
  • Export. YouMark's listing offers a spreadsheet export; Heartbeat's exports are chapter lines and viki text.

Our verdict

We think the choice is about audience, not features. For personal study (a course, a recipe, a game guide you are following) a private bookmark extension is the better tool, and Heartbeat would publish notes you did not mean to share. For anything you want to show, share or come back to with others (the best scenes of a show, a playlist of highlights across videos, the tracks of a long mix), Heartbeat does what no bookmarker does: each timestamp becomes a page with a link, and it joins a public collection that grows with everyone's moments. If both matter, use both: a bookmarker for notes, Heartbeat for the moments worth sharing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Heartbeat a YouTube bookmark extension?

Partly. Its extension saves a time in a YouTube video with one key, H, like a bookmarker, but each one becomes a public moment on h.ki rather than a private bookmark.

Can I keep my Heartbeat moments private?

Moments carry a visibility setting, but the choices are visible only when signed in, and the moments we saw were public. For private notes, a bookmark extension is the safer choice.

Which extension saves YouTube timestamps with notes?

Timi, YouMark and YT Bookmarker say in their Chrome Web Store listings that they save timestamps with notes.

Can I share a bookmark from a bookmark extension?

It depends on the extension; most are made for your own use. A Heartbeat moment is shared by its h.ki/<id> link, which anyone can open without the extension.

Does Heartbeat work on Vimeo?

No. Heartbeat works with YouTube videos, including YouTube Music.
