Riddles and Trivia

Heartbeat's riddles (h.ki/riddles) and trivia (h.ki/trivia) are question cards you answer by typing, with hints that show the answer a letter at a time. Anyone signed in can publish their own; each question has its own page, h.ki/ri... or h.ki/tr....

Heartbeat's riddles and trivia are question cards you answer by typing: a riddle is a word puzzle such as "What is gegs?" (scrambled eggs), trivia a general-knowledge question, and both offer hints that reveal the answer a letter at a time. They are at h.ki/riddles and h.ki/trivia, in h.ki's sidebar, and anyone signed in can publish their own.

How a riddle works

A riddle is a few letters or words arranged to hide a phrase. "Gegs" is "eggs" scrambled, so the answer is scrambled eggs; "ecnalg" is "glance" written backwards, a backwards glance. If you are stuck, Show first letter (then the second, the third) gives the answer away a letter at a time.

As you type, letters turn yellow when they belong in the answer but sit in the wrong place, and green when the letter and its place are right, the same idea as the word game Wordle. That lets you close in on the answer without the hint buttons.

Each riddle has its own page: h.ki/riipzm5h8 asks "Is Vatican City a country?", with the Answer box, Show first letter, Show full answer, and buttons to the previous and next riddle (seen Nov 7, 2026). Its page title reads "View riddle - Heartbeat".

How trivia works

Trivia asks general-knowledge questions, "what fruit has its seeds on the outside?" among them, with the same letter-by-letter hints (it is a strawberry). Trivia arrived on Apr 26, 2025 with 20 questions.

A trivia question's page looks like a riddle's: h.ki/trs86c98a asks "What does BCE stand for?", titled "View trivia - Heartbeat" (Nov 7, 2026).

Write your own

By Jun 7, 2025, riddles had moved to h.ki's main sidebar and anyone could add one with a button on the riddles page; "same with trivia", where you publish your own question and its answer for others to try.

Click the plus, type the riddle and its answer, and other people can try to solve it; the Jun 30, 2025 video calls riddles "an interactive content type", since readers type rather than only watch. h.ki/how-to-heartbeat lists both as things you can "publish your own" of.

Riddles, trivia and payments

In March and April 2025, before writing your own was possible, George Vanous described riddles as a content type creators would publish and be paid for; h.ki/about lists riddles and trivia among what you can create. Heartbeat's payment rules are on Quality Content and Payments: we found no page that states how riddles or trivia are counted apart from other content.

Where they used to be

When riddles came on Feb 16, 2025 they sat under a Fun button with 11 riddles, and trivia was reached the same way (h.ki, Fun, Trivia) in April 2025. On Nov 7, 2026 Riddles and Trivia each had their own sidebar entry, and h.ki/fun held games and logic puzzles (Heartbeat Fun and Tools).

What we think

We think the yellow and green letters are the best part, because they turn a question you either know or do not into a puzzle you can work out. The hint buttons make it easy to give up, though: one click on Show full answer ends it, and we saw no score, timer or leaderboard on Nov 7, 2026, all three named as plans in the Feb 2025 video. We also think trivia questions written by readers need a source line, since a wrong answer is published to everyone; we saw none on the question pages.

Frequently asked questions

Where are Heartbeat's riddles?

At h.ki/riddles, Riddles in h.ki's sidebar.

What do the yellow and green letters mean?

Yellow means the letter is in the answer but in the wrong place; green means the right letter in the right place.

Can I write my own riddle or trivia question?

Yes, signed in: use the add button on h.ki/riddles or h.ki/trivia and type the question and its answer.

Do I need to sign in to play?

No. On Nov 7, 2026 the riddles and trivia pages opened and showed their questions and hints to a signed-out visitor.

What are Collections?

A tab beside List on both pages that groups questions; we did not see how collections are made, which may need sign-in.
