How to Make a Moment

To make a Heartbeat moment, press H while watching a YouTube video with the Heartbeat extension, or open the video on h.ki and click "+ Moment"; then give it a meaningful title and nudge the start time to the exact frame.

To make a moment on Heartbeat, play a video on h.ki and click + Moment (or press H) at the second you want to keep; with the Heartbeat Extension installed, pressing H while watching any video on youtube.com does the same. The moment is saved to your heartbeat at that start time, and you then give it a title and nudge its start to the exact frame. A moment is a named point in a YouTube video with its own address at h.ki, which is what Moment Pages show.

Make a moment with the extension (press H on YouTube)

With the Heartbeat extension in Chrome, press H while any YouTube video plays: that creates a moment at that second, and pressing H again creates another. Click the Heart in Chrome's toolbar to see the moments you just made, and click one to jump the video back to it. If the Heart is not in the toolbar, pin it from Chrome's puzzle-piece menu, as Heartbeat Extension shows.

The extension's panel on YouTube is also where you title a moment right away; the moments then appear on h.ki under your heartbeat.

Make a moment on h.ki (+ Moment)

  1. Open the video on Heartbeat. h.ki's own guide says to replace "com" with "h.ki" in the YouTube address; the form that loaded for a signed-out visitor on Nov 7, 2026 was h.ki/yo plus the video's id (see Video Pages and Open a YouTube Video on Heartbeat).
  2. Play to the part you want and click + Moment at the top of the moment list, or press H.
  3. Give the moment a title.

In the July 2025 video, George Vanous opens a Superman trailer on h.ki this way, clicks + Moment once and presses H twice, which leaves three moments. The h key is listed in the player's own shortcut dialog as "Save this moment" (Keyboard Shortcuts).

The same works for music: a song on music.youtube.com, opened on h.ki the same way, takes moments like any video.

Give it a title and an accurate start time

A press of H rarely lands on the exact frame where a scene starts, so the editor lets you nudge it: in the video, the start is moved back 0.1 seconds at a time until the cut to the rescued girl, then titled "Superman saves the girl".

The toolbar beside the player seeks back or forward 2 seconds or 10 seconds, so you can rewind to a moment you just missed without leaving the page.

To edit a moment, click its edit button, then step the start back a second, forward 0.1 seconds, or one frame at a time to get the precise start, and type a title. On h.ki's player the same keys work while paused: , for the previous frame and . for the next.

A meaningful title and an accurate start time are the two things Heartbeat counts as quality in a moment (Quality Content and Payments); h.ki/quality adds "Variety of content you genuinely enjoy".

End times and loops

A moment can also have an end time. In the August 2023 extension video an end point is set by stepping 0.1 seconds at a time, and with both a start and a stop the moment can play on a loop; George Vanous says there that "the stop point is optional". On h.ki today most moments are only a start: in h.ki's public data the moments of its own About viki all had no end time (Nov 7, 2026). Looping a shared moment is covered in Share and Loop a Moment.

Delete a moment or see all of yours

To delete a moment, click its three dots and choose Delete moment.

To see every moment you made, go to h.ki, open My heartbeat and the Moments tab; Videos lists each video you made moments in once. Moments can be retitled and deleted from there too. Signed out, h.ki/heartbeat shows only "Create your moments / Sign in and start creating your own moments" (Nov 7, 2026).

Copy someone else's moment

You do not have to start from scratch: on another person's moment, click the three dots and Copy to make an exact duplicate that is yours to edit. The list's More menu on a moment page offers Add to my moments, Copy as viki and Copy as YouTube Chapters (seen Nov 7, 2026); copying moments into a viki is how Vikis get their video.

What we think

We think the + Moment button on h.ki is the easier start for a new user, since it needs no extension, while the H key on youtube.com is faster for anyone who already watches there all day. We also think the 0.1-second and one-frame steps are the feature that matters most: a moment that starts mid-sentence is the difference h.ki/quality names, and these controls are finer than YouTube's own "Start at" box, which takes whole seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the extension to make a Heartbeat moment?

No. On h.ki the + Moment button and the H key make moments in the site's own player. The extension is needed only to press H on youtube.com itself.

Do I need to sign in to make a moment?

Yes. Moments are saved to your heartbeat, and h.ki's sign-in is a Google account (Sign-in and Accounts). Signed out, the Save button reads "Sign in to make your opinion count."

Can a Heartbeat moment have an end time?

Yes, an end time is optional. Without one the moment is a start point and the video plays on from it.

Can I change a moment's start time later?

Yes. Open the moment's editor from its edit button or from your Moments tab and nudge the start by seconds, tenths or single frames.

Is a moment the same as a YouTube chapter?

No. h.ki/how-to-heartbeat says chapters have no link of their own and only the uploader can add them, while anyone can make moments and each one has its own address. See Heartbeat vs YouTube Clips.
