Top Tips

Every Heartbeat tip in a sentence or two, from replacing "com" with "h.ki" and pressing H to save a moment to the ? key, h.ki/as/ and pretty links, each with a link to its full page.

The fastest Heartbeat tip is the one in its own video: replace "com" with "h.ki" in a YouTube address and the video opens on Heartbeat, one click from a saved moment. Here is every tip we found, a sentence or two each, with a link to the page that explains it.

We think the first three are the ones worth learning today; the rest pay off once you make moments every day.

Making moments

  • Replace "com" with "h.ki". www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID becomes www.youtube.h.ki/watch?v=ID, which opens the video on Heartbeat (checked Nov 7, 2026). Learn more: Open a YouTube Video on Heartbeat.
  • Press H on YouTube. With the extension installed, H saves a moment at the second you are watching. Learn more: How to Make a Moment.
  • Title it and nudge the start. A meaningful title and an exact start time are what Heartbeat counts as quality. Learn more: Quality Content and Payments.
  • Pin the Heart. Pin the extension in Chrome's puzzle-piece menu so its Heart, the list of your moments, is always one click away. Learn more: Heartbeat Extension.

Watching

  • Press ? for every key. On any player page, ? lists the shortcuts; d and a jump to the next and previous moment, j and l move 10 seconds, comma and period one frame. Learn more: Keyboard Shortcuts.
  • Open any video by its id. h.ki/yo followed by the 11-character YouTube id is that video's page, with every moment people made in it. Learn more: Video Pages.
  • Loop by default. A shared moment link carries Loop unless you switch it off. Learn more: Share and Loop a Moment.
  • Link to the exact second. A moment's own address, h.ki/mo and seven characters, opens the video at its start. Learn more: Link to an Exact Moment.
  • Watch a Short as a video. Replace "shorts" with "watch" in its address. Learn more: Turn a Short into a Video.

Sharing and collecting

  • Your heartbeat as a website. Change the @ in your profile address to /as/, as in h.ki/as/georgevanous. Learn more: Your Heartbeat as a Website.
  • Playlists start where you choose. Each moment in a playlist starts at its own second, which YouTube playlists cannot do. Learn more: Playlists.
  • Write a viki. A written page whose timestamps play moments beside the text. Learn more: Heartbeat Vikis.
  • Filter search. Filters narrow results by date added, type and sort. Learn more: Heartbeat Search.

Beyond moments

  • Hover, don't click. Heartbeat Photos shows the full image when you hover a thumbnail; T, V and I change the view. Learn more: Heartbeat Photos.
  • Free tools. 19 small utilities at h.ki/tool, from a time zone planner to a loan calculator. Learn more: Heartbeat Fun and Tools.
  • Read the API. The JSON Heartbeat's own pages call answers without sign-in. Learn more: Heartbeat Public API.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Heartbeat trick?

We think it is replacing "com" with "h.ki" in a YouTube address: it needs nothing installed and puts "+ Moment" one click away (Open a YouTube Video on Heartbeat).

How do I see every Heartbeat keyboard shortcut?

Press ? on any player page on h.ki (Keyboard Shortcuts).

Do I need the extension?

No. The extension adds the H key on YouTube itself, but h.ki and the "replace com" trick make moments without it (How to Make a Moment).
