Home and Sidebar

Heartbeat's home page at h.ki is a row of topic chips over shelves of Shorts, vikis and the newest moments; the header has search, a three-dot menu with the dark theme switch and keyboard shortcuts, and Sign in, and the left sidebar links Vikis, Riddles, Trivia, Fun, Tools, Photos, Creators and My heartbeat.

Heartbeat's home page is what typing h.ki in a browser opens: a row of topic chips over shelves of moments and vikis, with the header's search box above and the sidebar of Heartbeat's sections on the left; in "❤️ What is Heartbeat?" (Oct 7, 2024) George Vanous showed that it "changes every time you refresh", apart from a pinned slot, and that a chip such as Women or Comedy shows the current highlights of that topic. On Nov 7, 2026 the dark theme was on by default, with a switch for light.

This page describes the home page, header, sidebar and menus as a signed-out visitor saw them on Nov 7, 2026 (footer: "Heartbeat 2.107.59", "© 2026 Freedom!").

The chips

A row of chips runs across the top. All is the default. Last 24 hours carries a red dot, and its tooltip counted the new moments that day ("12 new moments in last 24 hours" on Nov 7, 2026). Then come the topics, more than a hundred of them, from Heartbeat, Women, Music, Pax Dei, Games, Movies, Shows, Comedy, Fitness and Travel through games (Diablo 4, Path of Exile 2, New World, Civilization 7, World of Warcraft), shows (Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, Star Trek, Stargate), music (Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift, Covers), places (Dubai, Canada, Greece, Vancouver) and labels such as HD, Not HD, Age-gated, Blocked and Reupload. Each chip is a tag, with its own page at h.ki/tag/<name> (such as h.ki/tag/music).

Heartbeat's videos call these chips "supertags". In "YouTube Playables ❤️ Play games on YouTube!" (Jun 16, 2024), George announced Shorts on Heartbeat with "if you click shorts as a super tag up there you can see only shorts", saying Heartbeat "curates" the good ones.

A playlist opens as this same page with its own chip selected first.

The shelves

Under the chips, on Nov 7, 2026:

  • Shorts: vertical moments, from YouTube Shorts.
  • Vikis: cards for vikis such as "What is ❤️ Heartbeat?" (h.ki/about), Best of Heartbeat (h.ki/best), Women, Chess and Movies (Vikis).
  • Moments: the newest moments by the community, with "More moments".

Every card shows a thumbnail, a title, the creator's avatar and name, views when there are any, and its age. A card's thumbnail plays on hover, which the avatar menu can turn off (below).

The header

Part What it does
❤️ Heartbeat logo Back to the home page
Search box Opens h.ki/search?q= (Heartbeat Search)
Three-dot menu "Dark theme" switch (on by default) and "Keyboard shortcuts" (Keyboard Shortcuts)
Sign in Google sign-in (Sign-in and Accounts); signed in, your avatar and its menu

Light and dark mode

"Heartbeat features - No fluff" (Dec 25, 2023) opens with the avatar menu, then light mode and dark mode, then typing h.ki to open Heartbeat. On Nov 7, 2026 a signed-out visitor found the switch in the header's three-dot menu as "Dark theme", on by default; turning it off gives the light theme.

The avatar menu

Signed in, the avatar at the top right opens a menu of preferences. In the Oct 7, 2024 video George turned off "autoplay on hover" so thumbnails stop playing when the pointer passes over them, switched view counts on and off, and said that "a lot of the features of heartbeat can be customized in your avatar menu"; a choice about ads was there too, for ads he said Heartbeat did not yet run. The menu could not be checked signed out on Nov 7, 2026.

Under it, More expands to:

  • Heartbeats I follow (h.ki/feed/following), with the people you follow listed under it. Signed out it listed George Vanous and Curtis Pyke, each with an add-person button.
  • My playlists.
  • More from Heartbeat: Investor dashboard (invest.h.ki), Freedom! (freedom.h.ki), Aegis (aegis.h.ki), Thumbs (thumbs.h.ki), Spam (spam.h.ki), Viki prototype (vi.ki, the site this page is on) and Heartbeat extension (its Chrome Web Store listing). What each address is today is on Heartbeat Domains.

The foot of the sidebar has the Privacy policy (Privacy Policy), the version number and "© 2026 Freedom!". The b key shows or hides the sidebar, and on a video page it starts folded away, behind a small arrow at the top left.

The More menu is fairly new: in "❤️ Heartbeat pretty links" (Apr 20, 2025) George showed "a new sidebar" and how it "used to look", with "quite a lot of links", which were now "hidden behind the more menu".

What we think

We think the chip row is both Heartbeat's best and worst feature for a first-time visitor. It is a quick way into a subject someone has already curated (Game of Thrones, Piano, Wheel of Time), but at over a hundred chips, mixing topics with labels such as "Fake", "Bad" and "Adult-theme", it reads more like the owner's own filing system than a menu. The dark theme by default and the very short header (search, one menu, Sign in) feel close to YouTube's own, which we think is deliberate: someone who knows YouTube is at home at once.

Frequently asked questions

How do I switch Heartbeat to light mode?

Open the three-dot menu in the header and turn off "Dark theme". Dark is the default.

Why does the Heartbeat home page change when I refresh?

The shelves show fresh moments each time; George's Oct 7, 2024 video says the page "changes every time you refresh", apart from a pinned slot.

What are the chips at the top of h.ki?

Tags, which Heartbeat's videos call supertags. Each shows the moments tagged with it, and has its own page at h.ki/tag/ plus the tag's name.

How do I stop thumbnails playing on hover?

Signed in, open the avatar menu and turn off autoplay on hover, as George showed in an Oct 7, 2024 video.

Where is the list of people I follow?

In the sidebar, under More, "Heartbeats I follow", or at h.ki/feed/following.
