Keyboard Shortcuts

On any Heartbeat player page, press ? for the full list of keyboard shortcuts; the main ones are k or Space to play or pause, d and a for the next and previous moment, j and l to jump 10 seconds, the arrows for 5 seconds, comma and period for single frames, h to save a moment and t for theater mode.

Heartbeat's keyboard shortcuts are listed by pressing ? on any page with a player, and the ones that are its own are d for the next moment and a for the previous one, which George Vanous called a "pro tip" and "a fast way to navigate a viki" in "How to viki ❤️ Heartbeat" (Feb 2, 2025). The rest follow YouTube's layout: k or Space to play or pause, j and l for 10 seconds back and forward, the Left and Right arrows for 5 seconds, 0 to 9 to jump to a tenth of the video, comma and period for one frame, m to mute, c for captions, plus h to save the moment, t for theater mode, y for your heartbeat and b for the sidebar.

The tables below are the "Keyboard shortcuts" dialog as h.ki showed it on Nov 7, 2026 (Heartbeat 2.107.59), opened with ? on a moment page. The same dialog is in the header's three-dot menu (Home and Sidebar).

The keys Heartbeat adds

d and a move between moments, the thing Heartbeat adds to a YouTube video. On a moment page or a video page they step through the moment list on the right; in a viki they step through the moments in the text, and h.ki/about's tips put it as "d - Next timestamp" alongside the Right arrow, "Skip ahead 5 seconds".

h saves the moment where the video is, the same as the + Moment button: in a Jul 13, 2025 video George clicked "plus moment" for one moment, then said "I can press the H key on my keyboard as a hotkey" and made two more that way. It is the same key the Heartbeat Extension uses on youtube.com, and h.ki/about points out that the H of h.ki matches it. Saving needs a signed-in account; how a moment is made and titled is in How to Make a Moment.

y opens your own heartbeat, and b shows or hides the left sidebar, which a video page starts with folded away.

Frame by frame

Comma and period step one frame back or forward while the video is paused, the keys YouTube uses too. They matter more on Heartbeat because a moment's start time is the whole point: the moment editor's own buttons nudge by 1 second, 0.1 second and one frame, and the keys let you find the exact frame before you press h.

Keys in other parts of Heartbeat

  • Heartbeat Photos has its own keys, listed by pressing ? in the photo viewer: R rotates, T theater mode, V grid view, C click mode, I the info sidebar, H adds to Favorites, and G followed by H or V flips the image (Heartbeat Photos).
  • Heartkeys, the typing game at h.ki/fun/heartkeys, is about the keyboard itself (Heartbeat Fun and Tools).

In the moment editor, a key not in the dialog: George, in "❤️ What is Heartbeat?" (Oct 7, 2024), said that if you did not like your changes to a start time, "just press X it'll undo your edits". We could not check it on Nov 7, 2026, because the editor needs sign-in.

Keys that trip people up

  • A key types into the search box instead: click the video or anywhere outside the box first.
  • Comma and period do nothing: pause the video first; they step frames only while paused.
  • h does nothing: you are signed out. Saving a moment needs a Google sign-in (Sign-in and Accounts).

What we think

We think d is the one key worth learning on Heartbeat: on a long concert or a video with dozens of community moments it is the fastest way to hear each highlight in turn, and YouTube has no single key for it (its chapter keys need Ctrl or Option with an arrow, and only on videos with chapters). The rest of the list follows YouTube's own so closely (j, k, l, the arrows, 0 to 9, comma and period, m, c, t) that a YouTube viewer can use Heartbeat without reading it. Compare YouTube's full list on youtube.vi.ki.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see Heartbeat's keyboard shortcuts?

Press ? on any Heartbeat page with a player, or open the three-dot menu in the header and choose Keyboard shortcuts.

What key goes to the next moment on Heartbeat?

d goes to the next moment and a to the previous one, on moment pages, video pages and vikis.

What does the h key do on Heartbeat?

It saves the moment at the current second, like the + Moment button. You need to be signed in.

Are Heartbeat's shortcuts the same as YouTube's?

Mostly: k, Space, j, l, the arrows, 0 to 9, comma, period, m, c and t do the same things. Heartbeat adds d and a for moments, h to save one, y for your heartbeat and b for the sidebar, and leaves out keys such as f for full screen.
